What Is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is a sacred relationship in which a trained guide accompanies you as you pay attention to God's movement in your life. A spiritual director doesn't fix, diagnose, or advise. They listen. They ask questions that open rather than close. They hold space for the Holy Spirit — the true director of every soul.

The practice traces back to the Desert Fathers and Mothers of 4th-century Egypt, where seekers traveled into the wilderness simply to receive a “word” from a holy elder. It was formalized through monasticism, carried westward by St. Benedict, and given its most enduring method by St. Ignatius of Loyola in the 16th century. Today it is practiced across Catholic, Protestant, Episcopal, Anglican, Orthodox, and ecumenical traditions — and it is actively growing.

Spiritual direction is not therapy. It is not coaching. It is not religious counseling. It is something older and rarer: a sacred companionship in which you are helped to hear what you might otherwise miss.

“The whole purpose of spiritual direction is to penetrate beneath the surface of a person's life and bring out one's inner spiritual freedom, one's inmost truth.”

— Thomas Merton, Spiritual Direction and Meditation (1960)

How It Differs From Therapy and Coaching

Practiced Across the Christian Tradition

Spiritual direction has independent roots in every major branch of Christianity. Our directory will include directors from all of these traditions:

Why Vetting Matters

Finding a spiritual director is an act of profound trust. You are inviting someone into your interior life. That is why every director listed on FindSpiritualDirector.com will have:

Affirmed the Nicene Creed as the shared ground of the historic Christian faith

Completed a recognized formation program in spiritual direction

Confirmed they receive their own ongoing spiritual direction

Agreed to our Code of Accompaniment covering confidentiality, boundaries, and ethics

Provided verifiable information about their training, supervision, and tradition

“The human soul doesn't want to be advised or fixed or saved. It simply wants to be witnessed — to be seen, heard and companioned exactly as it is.”

— Parker Palmer, The Gift of Presence (On Being)
