Find Spiritual Director

Trust & Integrity

Our Vetting Process

Spiritual direction is a relationship of deep trust. The person sitting across from you holds space for your most honest prayers, your doubts, and your deepest longings. That relationship deserves a directory built on integrity. Here is how we vet every director listed on FindSpiritualDirector.com.

1

Nicene Creed Affirmation

Every director listed on our site affirms the Nicene Creed as a shared confession of historic Christian faith. This is the theological baseline that unites our directory across Catholic, Protestant, Episcopal, Anglican, Orthodox, and ecumenical traditions. We do not require alignment with any single denomination — only with the ancient confession that has defined Christian orthodoxy for seventeen centuries.

2

Formation Verification

We verify that each director has completed a recognized formation program in spiritual direction. This may be through a seminary, religious order, retreat center, or accredited institute such as the Shalem Institute, Mercy Center, the Cenacle, or comparable programs. Formation is what distinguishes a spiritual director from a well-meaning friend. We take it seriously.

3

Active Direction Confirmation

Directors who accompany others should themselves be accompanied. We confirm that each listed director is currently receiving spiritual direction or supervision from a qualified director. This practice of mutual accountability is a hallmark of responsible spiritual accompaniment.

4

Code of Accompaniment

Every listed director agrees to our Code of Accompaniment, which outlines ethical commitments essential to the director-directee relationship: maintaining confidentiality, respecting boundaries, referring when the directee’s needs exceed the director’s scope, and honoring the directee’s freedom and agency at every point.

Profile Review

Each profile is reviewed by our team before publication. We look for completeness, accuracy, and clarity. A director’s profile is often the first point of contact a seeker has with the practice of spiritual direction. It should be honest, warm, and informative. We work with directors to make sure it is.

What We Cannot Guarantee

Our vetting process is thorough, but no directory can guarantee a perfect match. Spiritual direction is a relational art, and the fit between a director and a directee depends on factors that no screening process can fully predict: personality, communication style, theological nuance, and the movement of the Spirit.

We encourage every seeker to trust their own discernment. If a relationship does not feel right, it is appropriate — and encouraged — to name that and explore other options. A good director will always support your freedom.

If you ever have concerns about a listed director, please contact us. We take every report seriously.
