Celtic Spirituality & Direction

Celtic spirituality draws on the rich heritage of the early Christian communities of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Brittany. These communities cultivated a faith deeply woven into the natural world -- a spirituality of thin places where the boundary between heaven and earth grows transparent. Celtic Christians saw God's presence in the turning of seasons, the flight of birds, the movement of tides, and the ordinary rhythms of daily life.

Central to the Celtic tradition is the concept of the anam cara, or soul friend. In early Celtic Christianity, every person was encouraged to have an anam cara -- a companion who could hear your deepest truth without judgment and help you discern God's presence in your story. This ancient practice is remarkably close to what we now call spiritual direction, making the Celtic tradition one of the deepest wells from which the modern direction movement draws.
