Find Spiritual Director

Foundational Guide

What Is Spiritual Direction?

Understanding the ancient practice of sacred accompaniment -- what it is, how it works, and why thousands of Christians across every tradition are rediscovering it today.

Spiritual direction is a relationship in which a trained companion -- called a spiritual director -- helps you pay attention to God's presence and movement in your life. It is not therapy, not counseling, and not advice-giving. Instead, it is a contemplative practice of deep listening, where the director helps you notice what God is already doing and how you might respond.

The practice has roots stretching back to the Desert Fathers and Mothers of the 3rd and 4th centuries, and it has been sustained across Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Protestant traditions for nearly two thousand years. Today, spiritual direction is experiencing a remarkable renewal as Christians from all backgrounds seek deeper, more authentic encounters with God beyond Sunday morning.

Whether you are navigating a major life transition, deepening a prayer practice, discerning a vocation, or simply longing for someone to walk with you in your faith journey, spiritual direction offers a sacred space for that exploration. Sessions typically happen monthly and last about an hour, centered on your lived experience of God.
