Baptist Spiritual Direction

You were raised on 'personal relationship with Jesus.' Spiritual direction is the practice that actually makes that real — not through more Bible study, but through learning to listen for the voice you've always believed was there.

Understanding the Tradition

What Is Baptist Spiritual Direction?

Most Baptists grew up hearing that Christianity is about a personal relationship with God. But somewhere along the way, that relationship became more about information than intimacy — more sermons, more studies, more head knowledge. Spiritual direction is the ancient practice that closes the gap between what you believe and what you actually experience.

A Baptist spiritual director isn't going to ask you to pray a rosary or chant. They're going to sit with you and ask, 'Where have you noticed God this week?' They'll help you pay attention to what the Holy Spirit is already doing — in your work, your family, your quiet moments, your restless nights. It's not mystical in a weird way. It's personal in the way your faith was always supposed to be.

Larry Crabb called it 'SoulTalk.' Ruth Haley Barton built an entire movement around it at the Transforming Center. Pete Scazzero showed that emotional health and spiritual depth are inseparable. These are Baptist and evangelical voices who discovered that the ancient practice of spiritual direction is the missing piece in the discipleship puzzle.

Is This For You?

Who is Baptist spiritual direction for?

  • You love Scripture but feel like your prayer life has gone flat
  • You're a pastor or ministry leader carrying weight no one in your congregation sees
  • You've hit a wall in your faith and more Bible study isn't breaking through
  • You're curious about contemplative practices but want to stay rooted in your tradition
  • You've been through a faith crisis and need someone safe to process with

“The human soul doesn't want to be advised or fixed or saved. It simply wants to be witnessed — to be seen, heard and companioned exactly as it is.”

— Parker Palmer
