Understanding the Tradition

What Is Charismatic Spiritual Direction?

Here is what most people do not realize: the Charismatic experience of the Spirit and the contemplative practice of spiritual direction are not opposites. They are two sides of the same coin. Both start from the same conviction — that God is not distant, that the Holy Spirit is actively present and speaking, and that the spiritual life is meant to be experienced, not just believed. The difference is that Charismatics tend to experience this in corporate worship, while spiritual direction creates space for it in the quiet, personal details of everyday life.

If you have grown up in a Charismatic or Pentecostal context, you already have extraordinary gifts: sensitivity to the Spirit, comfort with the supernatural, willingness to be moved. What spiritual direction adds is discernment. Not every impression is from God. Not every prophetic word lands the way it was intended. A skilled director helps you sort through your spiritual experience with patience and honesty — honoring the real encounters while developing the wisdom to know what to do with them.

This is not about trading your Charismatic identity for something more "respectable." Dallas Willard, who came from the Vineyard world, spent his life making the case that hearing God's voice is normal Christianity. Ruth Haley Barton, shaped by the evangelical-charismatic world, built the Transforming Center to give Spirit-filled leaders a place for soul care. There is a growing movement of directors who understand both the fire and the silence — and know they belong together.

Is This For You?

Who is Charismatic spiritual direction for?

  • You have powerful spiritual experiences but are not always sure what to do with them
  • You are a pastor or worship leader carrying spiritual intensity without enough support
  • You want deeper discernment about what is from God and what is from you
  • You are drawn to silence and contemplation but your church culture does not make space for it
  • You have been hurt by spiritual authority and need a safe, non-controlling companion

“The human soul doesn't want to be advised or fixed or saved. It simply wants to be witnessed — to be seen, heard and companioned exactly as it is.”

— Parker Palmer

Willard's Hearing God made the case that listening for God's voice is normal, not strange — a message that resonated deeply in Charismatic circles. His vision of life with God as an interactive relationship is the intellectual foundation for Charismatic spiritual direction.

Oliver McMahan

Author of A Living Stream: Spiritual Direction within the Pentecostal/Charismatic Tradition
