Understanding the Tradition
What Is Quaker Spiritual Direction?
Quaker spiritual direction — also known as spiritual accompaniment or spiritual friendship in the Quaker tradition — is rooted in the Religious Society of Friends, founded by George Fox in 17th-century England. At its heart is the radical conviction that every person has direct, unmediated access to God through what Quakers call the Inner Light or "that of God in every person."
Unlike traditions that rely heavily on sacraments, clergy, or formal liturgy, the Quaker approach emphasizes silence, waiting, and deep listening as the primary postures of the spiritual life. A Quaker director does not instruct or prescribe — they accompany you in the silence, asking questions that help you listen more carefully to what the Light is revealing within you. This is a tradition that trusts the Spirit's direct work in each individual soul.
One of the Quaker tradition's most distinctive contributions to spiritual direction is the clearness committee — a small group of trusted Friends who gather to help an individual discern a major decision by asking open, honest questions. This practice has been adapted widely outside Quaker circles and reflects the tradition's deep commitment to communal discernment and the belief that truth emerges best in the company of attentive listeners.
